Prince Rupert, "Where Canada's Widerness Begins", is located along the Northern Coast of British Columbia, 920 kilometers (550 miles) north of Vancouver, and only 65 kilometers (40 miles) southeast of Alaska. Prince Rupert provides access to some of the most remote, beautiful and naturally and culturally diverse regions in the world. One of the oldest continuously occupied regions of the world, Prince Rupert has a colorful past and an alluring environment. It is also the gateway to some of the most impressive scenery in the northwest. During World War II close to 10,000 Canadian and American troops were stationed in the area, and the city was a hub of activity. The second transcontinental railway ended in the city of Prince Rupert Since those days, the pulp and forestry have been key industries, plus tourism and fishing have become important industries. .................................................................................................................................. Every year the region welcomes thousands of tourists from around the world to experience the natural beauty, adventure opportunities, and the First Nations culture. The Tsimshian people have occupied territories on British Columbia’s North West coast since time immemorial. The Tsimshian Nation is one of the largest First Nations in British Columbia, with a population of approximately 10,000 people who trace their origins to one of the following communities: Gitga’at (Hartley Bay), Kitasoo (Klemtu), Kitkatla, Kitselas, Kitsumkalum, Lax Kw’Alaams, Metlakatla and Metlakatla Alaska. While in Prince Rupert visitors are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to learn of the First Nation peoples’ history, culture and heritage.
